A Call to Action
On May 26th, Judge Sonia Sotomayor was chosen to be President Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court. The Senate has announced that confirmation hearings will begin on July 13th.

Judge Sotomayor has been the most dedicated of public servants over a legal career spanning 30 years. She has worked on nearly every level of our judicial system and brings with her an amount of judicial expertise unmatched by any Supreme Court nominee in the last century.

If confirmed to the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor will be the first Latina and only the third woman. Her nomination is a point of pride for the Latino community and all Americans, and we believe that her wide-ranging experience will be nothing short of an asset to the court.

Already some politicians are attacking her record and her character. These attacks are meant only to distract the American public from the real issues at hand and draw out the confirmation hearings so as to score political points.

We will not be distracted.

We, the undersigned, urge Congress to take a stand against these unfair attacks and work to confirm Judge Sonia Sotomayor by focusing on her record and her judicial potential.

The previous two Supreme Court nominees were confirmed with the minimum of delay -- Justice Roberts was sworn in 71 days after his nomination, while Justice Alito was sworn after 91 days. Judge Sotomayor deserves a fair and timely hearing and the American people deserve hearings free from needless politicization and distractions.
